Primula sieboldii
One of the best woodland primulas it will grow happily on all but the driest soils
provided it is planted in dappled shade and also happy in moist conditions. Originating
in asia this was introduced to cultivation in Japan in the 16th century where many
hybrid variants have been developed and displayed, much in the same way that auriculas
are so popular in europe.
Introduction to european gardens was not until the 19th century and surprisingly
, since they make such good garden plants few variants have been readily available
until more recently,
Some of the best introductions are represented in the Barnhaven strains developed
by Jared and Sylvia Sinclair in Cumbria and continually refined to date at the Barnhaven
nursery in France.
Increasing numbers of Japanese hybrids are also becoming available in this country,
beautiful in form and colour.
